The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. Harold W. Coffin was born in Portland, Maine in 1891. He was a member of the class of 1916 at the University of Maine, majoring in electrical engineering. He married Grace Bristol, also a graduate of the University of Maine, and they had five children. Harold Coffin was in the military for 30 years, serving in both World War I and World War II.
